SC Johnson's rich five-generation history is filled with brave decisions and bold choices that have moved this company forward with integrity and success. View a few of our milestones.
1900 SC Johnson’s legacy of being a great place to work stretch back to its very beginning. In 1900 the company started offering paid vacations.
1917 SC Johnson offers profit sharing and group life insurance for all employees.
1921 Herbert F. Johnson, Sr. founded a community fund in Racine to unite volunteer agencies and more effectively raise money for their services. It was the precursor to today’s United Way of Racine County.
1934 SC Johnson establishes a pension plan for its employees in the depth of the Great Depression.
1935 H. F. Johnson, Jr. led the Carnaúba Expedition 15,000 miles, from Wisconsin to Brazil, in search of a sustainable source of wax for our products.
1940 Great Depression ended with no layoffs at Johnson Wax.
1955 SC Johnson introduced water-based aerosols, which reduced environmental impact while improving safety and performance.
1959 The SC Johnson Fund, Inc. was established to provide grants that support education, youth and family, including scholarships, community development, programs for disadvantaged families, and community enrichment such as environmental efforts.
1963 In Fortaleza, Brazil, H. F. Johnson, Jr. founded the Johnson School for primary education and ten years later, the company donated the school to the Brazilian government in an effort to provide more specialized training to the students.
1975 SC Johnson voluntarily and unilaterally eliminated Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from its aerosol products, three years before the U.S. mandate.
1979 After more than 40 years of doing so informally, SC Johnson set an official policy that the U.S. company will donate 5 percent of pre-tax profits to charitable causes.
1980’s SC Johnson chose to continue operating in South Africa, becoming one of the first signatories of the historic Sullivan Principles. The company stood by its diverse workforce and championed the fight for the end to apartheid.
1985 SC Johnson was a pioneer when it opened one of the first childcare centers in 1985 in the U.S. for the exclusive use of its employees and their families.
1991 President George H. Bush awarded SC Johnson a Presidential Citation for Environmental Quality Management. The Citation acknowledged SC Johnson's achievements in integrating responsible environmental practices and processes throughout its worldwide organization.
1991 SC Johnson issues its first public report and becomes one of the first consumer packaged good companies to report openly and extensively about its programs and policies.
1991 Then-chairman Samuel C. Johnson became founding member of World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), current Chairman and CEO, Dr. H. Fisk Johnson, services as Council Member today.
1992 SC Johnson receives Corporate Environmental Achievement Award from Environment Canada.
1993 The company’s worldwide Safety Health & Environment team has audited each manufacturing operation at least once every five years.
1993 SC Johnson Argentina is honored with the first Tierra XXI Award for its proactive role in protecting the environment. That same year, SC Johnson Australia receives the prestigious Banksia Award for Business Management in recognition of its adoption of environmentally-sound principles, and for leadership in recycling, waste management, and packaging reduction.
1994 SC Johnson received the World Environment Center Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development.
1995 Since 1995, SC Johnson has been recycling virtually all paper, corrugated plastic, glass and steel materials in our manufacturing and office facilities.
1996 SC Johnson receives gold medal in the 1996 EPA Green Lights Summer Games.
1998 Sam, Fisk and Curt Johnson reenacted the 1935 Carnauba expedition, reaffirming the company’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development.
1998 SC Johnson presented with the Business Ethics Award for best practices in social responsibility. The company was recognized for its sustainable community policies and practices in its nearly 60 host countries around the world.
2000 The Samuel C. Johnson Chair in Sustainable Global Enterprise is endowed at Cornell University.
2001 SC Johnson developed the first-of-its-kind Greenlist™ environmental classification system as a method to evaluate raw materials based on their environmental impact.
2002 At the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, Chairman Fisk Johnson was a signator of Global Corporate Citizenship: The Leadership Challenge for CEOs and Boards, which recommended a “Framework for Action” leaders can use to implement principles and practices for managing a company’s impact on society and its relationship with stakeholders.
2002 SC Johnson is the first consumer packaged good manufacturer to join U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program, a voluntary partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
2003 SC Johnson broke ground on the first turbine for our landfill gas Green Energies project that uses cogeneration to create steam and electricity for our largest manufacturing site while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by half.
2003 During the same year, U.S. EPA awarded SC Johnson the first-ever Lifetime Atmospheric Achievement Award.
2003 The Raid® brand launches Healthy Children, Healthy Homes™ program to combat childhood asthma. That same year, SC Johnson sponsors a public health program targeting malaria in Tafo, Ghana.
2004 SC Johnson announces installation of a second clean-burning methane and natural gas turbine that will boost greenhouse gas emission reductions to 52,000 tons annually.
2004 SC Johnson launches a malaria prevention and education program in South Africa building from the company’s existing Healthy Children, Healthy Homes™ program.
2004 SC Johnson participated in developing the groundbreaking Base of the Pyramid Protocol through which the private sector and local communities build economic, social and environmental value.
2005 SC Johnson is named to the top 10 of the "100 Best Places to Work for in America" according to FORTUNE magazine.
2006 SC Johnson awarded the Ron Brown Award for its commitment to responsible raw material choices through its Greenlist™ Program.
2006 SC Johnson is among the first to reach its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program, reducing its U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 23 percent per pound of product from 2000 to 2005.
